Things to do near Las Vegas
Sure there is gambling, luxury hotels, nightlife and celebrity appearances, but Las Vegas has a few other really cool often forgotten attractions you don't want to miss. Here are several of my favorites to try out next time you are in Sin City!
1. Mac King's Comedy & Magic Show at Harrahs.
A perfect mid-day escape from the Las Vegas heat, this is one of our favorite shows in Vegas. An excellent blend of magic, comedy, and fun will leave you amazed and laughing out loud. In my opinion this is one of the most underrated shows on the strip. The show typically isn't too crowded and tickets are inexpensive too!
2. Kayak the Colorado River -
Take a break from the hustle and bustle of Vegas and take a trip down the Colorado River. There are several companies that give guided kayak tours on the river and most of them can pick you up right from your hotel. We had a good experience with Desert Adventures. This is an amazing day trip and you will be rewarded with some beautiful views. Beat the heat and jump in the river water that has an average temperature of just 58 degrees.
3. Red Rock Canyon -
About a 30 minute drive from the strip takes you to the Red Rock natural area where you will be rewarded with some stunning views and vistas. There are tons of hiking and biking trails here as well as a 12 mile loop that zig zags through the park with pullover sections for photo ops! Highly recommend.
4. Day trip to the Grand Canyon -
The Southwest portion of the Grand Canyon is only a 2 hour drive from Las Vegas. If you have a day to spare, make the drive to see one of the most majestic sites in North America. There are multiple companies that offer half day helicopter tours that take you to the canyon in half the time while getting some great photo opportunities from the air.
5. Stratosphere Observation tower -
For the ultimate view of the Las Vegas strip, check this place out! The Stratosphere is the tallest freestanding observation tower in the United States and boasts some incredible views of the Las Vegas strip and surrounding landscapes. If you are a thrill seeker, try out one of the 3 rides at the very top. We tried "Big Shot" which is the highest thrill ride in the world and the experience was both exhilarating and frightening!
